Facts About Radon

Radon is an odorless radioactive gas created by decaying uranium in our soil that can enter your.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer for nonsmokers.

70% off all homes in Iowa have Radon above the EPA's action level of 4pCi/L.

Radon leads to about 21,00 lung cancer deaths each year, according to the EPA, and 400 of those victims are Iowans.

Most Common Radon Systems

Radon - sub slab depressurization - coring hole with no dust

Sub-Slab Depressurization

Radon systems are the most common and usually the best method for reducing radon. In this system, one or more suction pipes pass through the slab into the crushed rock or soil underneath. The pipes also may be put below the concrete slab from outside the house. A radon system fan connected to the suction pipe draws the radon gas from below the house and vents it outdoors.

Crawl Space Sub-Membrane Depressurization Systems

In crawl spaces that have dirt or gravel floors, Skyway seals your crawl space with an airtight membrane called a vapor barrier. All stored items and debris must be removed from the ground prior to the installation of the crawl space membrane. If there are sharp objects or rough gravel we can install a layer of non organic pad over the floor before placing the membrane to help with breathing. This helps prevent the plastic from being ripped or torn when placing storage items back in the area. We then install the vapor barrier which is a minimum 6 mil polyethylene, 6-12 mil cross laminate or 10 mil heavy duty vapor barrier. We secure the plastic membrane to the foundation walls. The radon mitigation system is then tied directly to the soil under the membrane. The system creates a twenty-four hour vacuum that constantly pulls the radon out to vent above the roof of the house.

Radon---drain-tile-system---pedestal-sump-sealing-

Drain Tile Systems

Drain tiles are installed by the builder in homes when water problems could be an issue. Using the pre existing drain system for radon mitigation can greatly increase the effectiveness of removing harmful gas. When a radon fan is attached to the drain systems it creates a new pathway for the radon to travel through. The drain acts as a “ready-made highway” for the radon gas to travel through, making these systems the most successful way to mitigate a home. Our radon system will in no way negatively affect the drainage system of your home.
